Nestle - Insights from CEO Paul Bulcke

I researched Nestle - 146 year old company as an introductory case for Theme III - General Manager as Integrator. What a success story for a company - Nestle has invented and re-invented itself all these years. The company's story and achievements are remarkable. Paul Bulcke interview on Nestle's website summarizes the value system and core company principles. He summarizes his association with the company as a journey of his life. Company builds careers and cares for its people. As per him - Nestle is a people's company. People do not have personal agenda and their agenda are overlapping with company's agenda. It seems like a family. The fact that 1.2 B units are sold every day and 280 K people work to make it happen is remarkable. Paul describes the value of "Trust" that people have in Nestle and he relates that nestle works very hard to maintain it. He describes that losing Trust of people destroys a lot of value for a company. Nestle has long term thinking and believe in values of authenticity and integrity. It believes in it people to create the Trust and drive the company value system. His quote "when ambitions turn in to Greed and when confidence turns in to arrogance then you have trouble", shows the long haul motives of the company. It is not there for short term gains. He takes pride in Nestle's Innovation and Innovation process as being the key for keeping up with the globalization and increasing complexity of business.
Another important agenda of the company is shared value. Paul describes it as value to society to generate value to shareholders. He identifies three focus areas to achieve shared value:
1. Nutrition and Wellness
2. Water
3. Rural Development
These three themes are related to customer's wellness and development of society which in turn are growth engines for the shareholder value.
Paul summarizes his key lessons on his 30 year leadership journey -
- have clarity of vision - be clear of direction
- Simplicity of message - keep the message for the employee and consumer simple
- Be complacent - He relates to complacency being thoughtful and aware
- Believe in people - Empower them
- Have an action plan - Decide on the action plan and walk in a team
- Be Authentic - Employees respond very well to authenticity which enthuses common vision
